저번 칼럼에서는 북미 Interview에 대한 큰 틀에 대해 알아보았어요.
오늘은 나만의 답변을 준비하는 구체적인 단계와 “STAR”에 대해 알아보겠습니다.
북미 면접은 영어로 진행되는 만큼 이번에도 영어, 한글 버전으로 준비했으니 하나씩 함께 살펴보아요.
Keywords
List important keywords that will be populated with your personal stories.
Conflict Resolution: Handling Crisis
Negotiation: Challenging Situation
Compromise to achieve goal: Working with difficult people
Creativity: Another team priorities not aligned
Flexibility: Adjust to a colleague style
Convincing: Take Stand
Handling-ve: Handling failure
Coworker view of you: Handling unexpected situation
Your strength: Decision without enough data
Your weakness: Conflict Resolution
Influence Others: Mentorship/ Leadership
Stories
1. List all the organizations you have been a part of.
(Example)
1) Academia: BSc, MSc, PhD
2) Industry: Jobs, Internship
3) Societies: Cultural, Technical, Sports
2. Think of stories from step 1 that can fall into one of the keywords categories.
The more stories the better. You should have at least 10-15 stories.
3. Create a summary table by assigning multiple keywords to each stories. This will help you filter out the stories when the question asked in the interview. An example can be seen below

이야기
1. 내가 살아오며 속했던 모든 조직, 단체 나열하기
(예시)
1) 학술: BSc, MSc, PhD
2) 경력: 회사, 인턴
3) 일반 단체: 오케스트라 동아리, 조기 축구회
2. 스텝1에서 떠올린 사회 경험으로 부터 핵심 단어와 연결시킬 수 있는 “스토리" 떠올리기
다다익선! 나만의 이야기가 많으면 많을 수록 좋으며, 적어도 10-15개의 스토리를 떠올려보아요
3. 여러개의 핵심단어를 각 스토리에 접목 시키는 요약본 만들기
이 과정은 실제 면접에서 질문을 받았을 때 적합한 나의 스토리를 떠올릴 수 있게 해줘요

같은 이야기를 해도 누군가는 두서 없이 들리고 누군가는 설득력 있고 이야기에 빠져든다는 느낌을 받아보지 않으셨나요?
나만의 재료인 스토리를 준비했다면 이제 “잘" 말하는 방법을 소개할게요.
STAR란 무엇인가?
STAR는 이 4단어들의 줄임말입니다.
S: Situation 상황 - 면접관의 질문에 예시로 들 상황을 설명하기
T: Task 과제 - 그 상황에서 어떤 일을 수행해야 했는지
A: Action 행동 - 내가 어떤 식으로 일을 수행했는지
R: Result 결과 - 나의 행동이 어떤 식이 좋은 결과가 나타났는지
STAR Format
Write down the stories in the STAR format as explained in the 2/4 part of this cheat sheet. This will help you practice the organization of the story in a meaningful way.
Example: "Tell us about a time when you had to convince senior executives"
Situation
-> Explain the situation and provide necessary context for your story.
"I worked as an intern in XYZ company in the summer of 2019. The project details provided to me were elaborative. After some initial brainstorming, and research I realized that the project approach can be modified to make it more efficient in terms of the underlying KPIs. I decided to talk to my manager about it."
Task
-> Explain the task and your responsibility in the situation
"I had an hour-long call with my manager and explained to him in detail the proposed approach and how it could improve the KPIs. I was able to convince him. He asked me if I will be able to present my proposed approach for approval in front of the higher executives. I agreed to it. I was working out of the ABC(city) office and the executives needed to fly in from XYZ(city) office."
Action
-> Walk through the steps and actions you took to address the issue.
"I did a quick background check on the executives to know better about their area of expertise so that I can convince them accordingly. I prepared an elaborative 15 slide presentation starting with explaining their approach, moving onto my proposed approach and finally comparing them on preliminary results.”
Result
-> State the outcome of the result of your actions
"After some active discussion we were able to establish that the proposed approach was better than the initial one. The executives proposed a few small changes to my approach and really appreciated my stand. At the end of my internship, I was selected among the 3 out of 68 interns who got to meet the senior vice president of the company over lunch."
STAR 형식으로 말하기
2번째에서 리스트한 스토리를 STAR 형식에 맞추어 작성하는 연습을 통해 내 이야기를 논리정연하게 말하는 방법을 배울 수 있어요
(예시) “경영진 또는 상급자를 설득해야 하는 경험에 대해 말해주세요"
상황
-> 면접 질문에 부합하는 상황과 맥락 설명
"저는 2019년 여름에 XYZ 회사에서 인턴으로 근무했습니다. 당시 저에게 받은 프로젝트 디테일은 상세했습니다. 초기 아이디어 회의와 조사를 하며 저는 프로젝트 접근 방식을 수정함으로써 KPI 측면에서 더 효율적으로 만들 수 있다는 것을 깨달았습니다. 이에 대해 제 매니저와 이야기해봐야겠다고 생각했습니다."
작업
-> 그 상황에서의 과제와 책임을 설명
"저는 매니저와 1시간 동안, 접근 방식을 제안하고 그것이 KPI를 개선할 수 있는 방법임을 상세히 설명했습니다. 그를 설득할 수 있었습니다. 그는 내가 제안한 방식이 더 상급 임원들에게도 승인받을 수 있는지 여부를 물어봤고 저는 동의했습니다. 저는 ABC(도시) 사무실에서 일하고 있었고, 임원들은 XYZ(도시) 로부터 비행기를 타고 와야했습니다."
행동
-> 문제 해결을 위해 내가 취한 행동과 조치에 대해 설명
"저는 그들의 환경에 대해 더 잘 알기 위해 임원들의 배경 조사를 진행했습니다. 제가 제안한 접근 방식을 납득시키기 위해 15장의 프레젠테이션을 준비했습니다. 첫번째로 현재의 방식을 설명하고, 그 다음으로 제가 제안한 접근 방식을 소개하고 마지막으로 두 접근 방식의 결과를 비교했습니다.”
결과
-> 내가 한 조치에 대한 결과
"활발한 토론 끝에 제가 제안한 접근 방식이 기존 방식보다 우수하다는 것을 입증할 수 있었습니다. 임원들은 제가 제안한 접근 방식에 몇 가지 작은 수정사항을 제안했고 매우 긍정적인 평가를 받을 수 있었습니다. 결과적으로 인턴쉽이 끝날 무렵, 저는 회사의 부사장과 만나게 된 68명의 인턴 중 3명에 선정되었습니다."

이렇게 나만의 답변을 체계적으로 준비한 사람과 그렇지 않은 사람은 면접에서 차이가 날 수밖에 없습니다.
+ 추가적으로
“20%의 매출 성장을 이루어냈다”
“매일 약 2시간정도의 시간을 절감할 수 있었다”
“최초 마감기간보다 평균 2일전에 마칠 수 있었다" 와 같이 구체적인 숫자를 이용하여 답변하면 더욱 객관적이고 임팩트 있는 답변이 됩니다!
